Lately the students have been studying the topic “What’s in our community?” in their social studies classes. To supplement their learning, they explored the area around the school to see what they could find.

For many of the students that don’t live near the school, it was a new experience to explore the area around the school. The classes were split into 2 different groups with 2 classes in each group. They were able to go out on two different occasions, once to the north side of the school and once to the south side. While walking, the students took short breaks to write down notes or take pictures of the different places they saw. When they got back to school the students returned to their classes and debriefed about what they had seen.

Although a bit tiring, it was a good experience for the students to see what is in the community around the school and they were also able to impress the teachers as well as onlookers by showing how well they can follow street rules when walking outside. We look forward to the students being able to use this experience to help them continue in the study of the rest of the topic.
